Ceanothus americanus

New Jersey tea is a small deciduous shrub native to North America. Its fragrant, showy white flowers often attract hummingbirds and pollinators, making it a great choice for a native planting or rain garden. Well-adapted to rocky soils and drought, New Jersey tea is highly-effective as a shrubby ground cover for hard-to-grow areas such as dry rocky slopes and banks.

Origin: Native to Michigan 

Current Sale Size:  12-18" bare-root seedling

Growth Rate: Slow (12" or less/yr.)

Soils: Well-drained sandy loams or rocky soils

Moisture: Dry to Mesic

Shade Tolerance: Sun to Part Shade

Mature Height: 1-3 ft.

Mature Spread: 3-5 ft.

Deer Damage Potential: Protection from deer and rabbits recommended. 

Uses: Landscaping, hummingbirds, pollinators, fragrant and showy flowers, rain gardens

Special Notes: A nitrogen-fixing shrub with deep roots; once established, it is drought tolerant and long-lived.
